What is the Quit Torture Teach-in & Vigil?

In November of 2006 a group of local activitists gathered at the Pvt. Bolio Road entrance to the Presidio of Monterey for three days of signs and songs to draw attention to the issue of government complicity in the use of torture.

They selected this location because the Presidio of Monterey is the home of the Defense Language Institute, and graduates from this facility may at times be called upon to act as interpreters in situations where a detainee is being mistreated, or tortured.

They chose the dates in November so that Camp Bolio would run concurrent with the huge gathering at Fort Benning, Georgia, where activists protest the existence of the infamous School of the Americas, and the SOA's practice of instructing soldiers from other countries in the techniques of torture.

The first Camp Bolio was so inspiring, invigorating, and fun, that participants demanded a repeat. This time Janet is lining up a slate of speakers and activities.

Although the nick-name is "Camp Bolio," this is a vigil, not a camp-out. We do, however, have permission to pitch tents to use for shelter from cold and rain.  Some vigil participants may chose to vigil quietly inside their tents during the coldest hours.  No campfires.

Although there are no fees, donations are appreciated.

Tell Janet you will be there
so she can get a head count for planning purposes.
