"The ‘American Century’ only began 60 years ago. But it seems already to be over, with the disaster of Iraq forcing some of
the United States’ ruling elites to realise that its hegemony has been severely weakened. But nobody seems to know
what to do next, or even how to behave."

...unveils the secret machinations behind the headlines, explaining the links between warrantless wiretapping and President Bush's Supreme Court nominees, between the unprecedented politicization of the Justice Department and the torture debate, between the White House's use of "signing statements" to assert a right to defy new laws and its efforts to impose greater control over career military JAG lawyers, and between the secrecy surrounding Vice President Cheney's energy task force and the holding of U.S. citizens without trial as "enemy combatants."

The Sword and the Dollar:  Imperialism Revolution and the Arms Race

by Michael Parenti

Although this book may be out-of-date, it's  a good introduction to the concept of imperialism.

"The magic of this book is that with a little bit of curiosity, a 16 year old could ingest the information quite easily. Parenti effectively provides the reader with a description of how capitalism works, why America has imperialistic elements, why corporate predators feed off of the third world, how clandestine operations work in conjunction with big business, and the outcome derived by multi-national corporations in the third world. The second portion of the book gives a conclusive summary of what the myths are of the then-Cold War, and what the intentions of the Arms race really are. A great book for the novice-leftist who wants to get a good start on what the truth really is and what myths our good friends at the top of the hierarchy provide us."  Review by Soren Messner Zidell
